Additional Configuration Information

The basic configuration information provided on the signup sheet given to each customer at the time their account was created contains the information most customers need to get all of their software configured.

However, in some cases, additional information is needed to appropriately configure more advanced software. The purpose of this page is to provide that additional information which a customer may need at some point. If you don't find the information you need here, please call us at (406)-443-3347 or (406)-227-9229 (eve).

DNS Servers

MIC maintains two DNS servers, one at 206.127.64.130 and one at 206.127.64.131, with hostnames of lewis.mt.net and clark.mt.net respectively. We recommend that customers list both domain name servers where possible.

Mail Server

The mail server is at mail.mt.net, with an IP address of 206.127.64.140. It supports SMTP, POP3 and IMAP. In most cases, whenever a program asks for the mail server address (either incoming or outgoing) they should put mail.mt.net in the appropriate field. On a rare occasion (the Mercury mail transport program, for instance), a program requires the use of the IP address instead. We HIGHLY recommend that you do not use the IP address unless it is absolutely required by the software you are using.

The Mail server will not accept mail from sources outside of MIC destined for a mail address which is not a MIC customer. As a result, if you are travelling and will be using a different provider to connect to the internet, you will need to utilize that providers mail server for outgoing mail. Simply change your mail program's outgoing (or SMTP) mail server to the mail server of the provider you are using. Alternatively, contact us for additional information about being able to use our web-based mail reader to read and send your mail while on the road.

Web and FTP Server

Additional information about the Web and FTP Server is available elsewhere on this site. Please consult those documents for additional information.

Time Server

MIC maintains a time server on one of it's servers for customer use. This time server is located at time.mt.net. It is synchronized to the naval observatory time on a regular basis. Both rdate and ntp time service is supported.

In order to use this service, you will need appropriate software for either ntp or rdate for your operating system.
